Jones, Rufus Matthew
(1863–1948)
   Theologian and Mystic.
   Jones was born in south China of a Quaker family. He was educated at Haverford College and Harvard University in the USA and in Europe. In 1887 he had a mystical experience which prompted him to dedicate his life to religion. He was Principal of Oak Grove Seminary from 1889 to 1893 and then taught philosophy at Haverford.
   Among his many books were Studies in Mystical Religion, The Faith and Practice of the Quakers and The Testimony of the Soul. During the First World War he was a founder of the American Friends’ Services Committee and he was recognised as the most prominent Quaker of his time.
